Mind the Heart
In Eastern literature, it is believed that the heart rules the mind; for the
heart is linked to Universal Consciousness, that which is omniscient and
omnipotent, all-seeing and all-knowing. It is also clear that the mind (ego) has
a role in conducting our day-to-day activities consciously. How then can you
change the role of the mind from being the master of your destiny to being the
beloved servant in your daily life?
You can learn many techniques at workshops and through counselling can also
acquire tools and abilities to centre the mind, feel calm, blissful and at
peace. Centering the mind with meditation, yoga, breath work, as well as
creative outlets like painting, pottery, other art, music, poetry; or even
simple pleasures like walking, singing, dancing or swimming are all
beneficial. These and other activities each contribute to clearing the mind and
helping you stay in the present moment. As does keeping your body clean, vibrant
and healthy. The more you develop and practise behaviours that keep you clear,
peaceful and fulfilled; the more these behaviours become the patterns of how you
react to situations, particularly the unexpected ones that take you by surprise.
The clearer and calmer the mind and the more in the present moment, the more
likely it is to catch the little games it plays. One little game is fooling you
into believing it is the boss; the mind likes to be in control, no question. It
brings up old patterns as ways of dealing with situations where new patterns may
be more effective, more peaceful or empowering. Who would best be in control of
your life? The mind or the heart? More likely the heart. Why? The heart is not
separate, as is the mind. The heart is connected to All That Is. Through
consciousness, the heart connects with Universal Mind or Universal
Consciousness. The certainty of your heart (intuition) is called knowingness.
Certain things you know to be true. These things are permanent, most other
things are impermanent. Your heart is connected to Universal Consciousness,
infinite in its reach in time and
space, while your finite mind or ego dies when you do.
We have to continue developing new patterns by doing those things that clear
the mind and bring us into the present moment. What would that be for you? Find
out and you have found ways of getting closer to your inner Self. That is
unshakeable. That is permanent. Beneficial patterns emanating from the heart and
healthy learned patterns from the mind allow you to live more peacefully and
joyfully.
The heart functions silently using a small voice - barely a whisper - and is
frequently overlooked or missed altogether. However when invited to participate,
the heart operates by knowing what’s best for us: how to function optimally, how
to remain healthy and whole, how to fulfill our potential and how to live, share
and communicate as if we are all One. Some say the root of all our problems
would be solved if we each took some time to be in a room, in a quiet state and
meditate on who we are. It’s true, this could be the route to helping with our
emotional patterns. Meditation slows down our thoughts and expands our awareness
of the truth, of our inner Self. Meditation and breathwork can help relieve the
daily stress in our lives and help us recognize when our mind is working
overtime. When our mind slows down, we become aware, and we recognize our
thoughts. We perceive how some of our thoughts make us feel well and others less
so. A quiet mind linked to the heart allows us to recognize the drama and the
truth in our lives and the difference.
While in a concentration camp, Victor Frankl realized that we always have the
last say in how we think, believe, feel and thus act or react. We have a choice
about our attitude, our action or reaction in a situation. In the beginning, as
we entrain our minds, it’s a continuous process to ensure that actions and
reactions come from the heart. We may begin to notice the
mind listening for and following thoughts and feelings generated by the heart.
Finally the conscious mind becomes a beloved servant and the heart the master of
our destiny.
